Shopping, planning, cooking, wrapping…as your to-do list grows larger and larger, one thing that may be on your mind is how to get more sleep this holiday season. The holidays are a time for celebration with loved ones, but they can also be a hectic and stressful time that can wreak havoc on your sleep schedule.

Whether you’re up late wrapping gifts to go under the tree or doing last-minute meal prep work, it’s important to remember to prioritize your sleep so that you can be fully functioning and present throughout this time of year. No one wants to feel groggy or fatigued when they should feel holly and jolly.

According to our customers, the top three things that they are concerned about are being healthy, relaxed, and comfortable. What can accomplish all three of those things? The right mattress. The mattress experts at Texas Mattress Makers are here to share some simple tips for how to get more sleep this holiday season.

Why can’t I sleep during the holidays?

This answer will be different for everyone. For some, the overall stress of the holiday season is enough to keep them up at night, and knowing how stress affects sleep, that vicious cycle can mess up your sleep quality. Others may experience seasonal mood disorders that affect how well they sleep.

How does sleep affect mental health? Not getting enough quality sleep can have a big impact on your brain’s ability to function, leading you to feel irritable, fatigued, and experience other symptoms that can exacerbate bad mental health days. The bottom line is that sleep is crucial to your well-being, physically and mentally.

If you’re looking for ways to get better quality sleep this time of year, here are some easy tips to follow straight from our mattress experts.

Tip #1: Stick to your routine

The holidays can throw our daily schedules into a tailspin as we tackle new tasks for the season’s demands. However, you still need to make sure that you keep a consistent sleep schedule that ensures you’re getting at least eight hours of sleep each night, as this is the key to feeling well-rested when you wake up. For your actual sleep schedule, try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even on the weekends, to regulate your body’s internal clock. This will help your body know when it’s time to hit the hay, which can help you fall (and stay) asleep easier.

You should also establish a cozy bedtime routine to allow your body to wind down and de-stress before bed. Take a warm bath, read a book, meditate, or do some stretches before settling down to sleep instead of scrolling on your phone and ruining your sleep-wake cycle.

Tip #2: Limit alcohol and caffeine intake

Sometimes fully enjoying the fall and winter seasons means having a pumpkin spice latte or a hot cider (or two) — but it’s important to know when to cut off the caffeine and booze throughout the day. Many people struggle with waking up multiple times throughout the night and end up feeling restless. Those wondering how to sleep through the night without waking up, might not be surprised to hear that an important step is to limit your caffeine and alcohol consumption.

If you’re feeling stressed or tired, we know that it’s hard to resist that third cup of coffee or glass of wine before bed. But trust us, caffeine and alcohol too close to bedtime will only disrupt your sleep further by stimulating your brain or reducing the amount of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep you get. If you want to get the restorative rest your brain and body need, avoid caffeine eight hours before bedtime and alcohol four hours before.

Tip #3: Make sure your bed is comfortable

Your bedroom should be a comfortable sanctuary of rest, not a space that causes you more stress!

If you’re waking up tired almost every morning, your bed is probably to blame. Even if you practice consistent and healthy sleep habits, sleeping on a bad mattress or a bad pillow can ruin the sweetest of dreams. If you notice any bad mattress symptoms such as dipping or creaking or bad pillow symptoms such as neck pain or lumpiness, it’s time to upgrade to a new mattress.

A high-quality bed can provide the support and comfort you need to sleep soundly and wake up feeling refreshed.
