King-Size Mattress Pros and Cons
King-size mattress pros
- Provides single sleepers and couples with room to spare
- Wide variety of options available
- Great if you and your family watch TV together in bed
King-size mattress cons
- Size may make it difficult to move the mattress into your home (around corners and into door frames)
- Heavy
- Difficult to flip
- More expensive than smaller alternatives, such as queen-size mattresses
King-Size Mattress Dimensions
The standard dimensions for a king-size mattress are 76 x 80 inches (198.5 x 203.5 cm). King mattresses provide ample sleeping room for couples, often with room to spare. If you have a pet or children who like to snuggle into bed with you, a king mattress can provide you with the space you need.
Of course, king-size mattresses are not just for couples. If you are a single sleeper, have the room for a king-size bed, and would enjoy having a large bed to lounge around in, then a king-size bed can be a perfect addition to your bedroom.
King mattresses are often ideal for the following:
- Couples who want additional sleeping space
- Families that sleep together
- Any single adult, but especially tall or restless sleepers
While it’s hard to beat the space a king-size mattress provides, couples with different support and comfort needs may enjoy the alternative of a split king mattress. Split king mattresses are two mattresses placed together within one bed frame.
These mattresses can be different (although it’s ideal to have them be the same height) and provide each sleeper with the specific firmness or support they need to get a good night’s sleep.
King-Size Mattress Cost
Your typical king-size mattress will start at around $1,100. From there, prices will vary depending on the components used in the mattress’s construction, with hybrid and latex mattresses typically being more expensive than memory foam mattresses.
If you purchase your mattress at Texas Mattress Makers, you get the benefit of missing out on overhead costs, no matter what type of mattress you purchase, as all of our mattresses are handmade in-house.
Buying Considerations for Finding the Best King-Size Mattress for You
1. Your sleeping position
Everyone has a preferred sleeping position, be that side, back, stomach, or combination. That’s why, when shopping for a mattress, our customers often ask us questions along the lines of “What is the best king-size mattress for side sleepers?”
The answer comes down to how your body makes contact with the mattress as you sleep.
- Side sleepers tend to experience pressure points on their hips and shoulders, so they typically benefit from a softer mattress — or a mattress with a soft comfort layer.
- Back and stomach sleepers may experience back pain if their mattress doesn’t provide enough support to keep their hips raised and their spine aligned.
- Combination sleepers who change positions during the nights typically want a “responsive” mattress that doesn’t make them feel “sunken” in their bed as they move from one position to another.
If you and your partner do not sleep in the same position, don’t lose hope. Most couples are able to find a “neutral” mattress that provides enough support for both people to sleep in comfort. If not, we recognize looking into the split king mattress mentioned previously.
2. Firmness and support
When customers come in claiming they want an extra-firm mattress or the best king-size mattress for back pain, the first thing we tend to do is ask if they want a firm mattress, a supportive mattress, or both.
That’s because, in mattress lingo, firmness relates to the feel of the mattress (soft, medium, firm, etc.) while support refers to the amount of support your body will receive as you sleep.
You can have two equally supportive mattresses that are completely different. Or, to put it another way, both soft and firm mattresses can both be good so long as the person who is sleeping on them prefers the firmness level they’ve been given and is receiving adequate support.
The key to finding a comfortable mattress isn’t knowing just your firmness preference or just your support needs, but knowing how those two factors interact together (and in addition to other factors such as weight and height).
3. Mattress type
Do you like sleeping on layers upon layers of foam? Or do you prefer the responsiveness and support of a coil-on-coil mattress? Maybe you want a more eco-friendly latex mattress? Either way, chances are you’ll find all of these options.
Due to their growing popularity, king mattresses are sold in all the standard types of mattresses, each of which offers different types of responsiveness, contouring, pressure relief, edge support, temperature regulation, and more.

If you haven’t purchased a new mattress in some time, keep in mind that mattress technology continues to evolve and improve. An issue that kept you from buying a certain type of mattress before — such as heat retention in foam mattresses — may have been solved (in this case, with cooling gel, graphite, or copper-infused materials).
