BUYING GUIDE
Choosing The Best Queen-Size Mattress for You
On the lookout for the best queen-size mattress available? Before investing in a mattress that someone else says is the best, we encourage you to do a little research into what makes a queen-size mattress ideal for you.
Queen-size Mattresses
A versatile size perfect for couples, guest rooms, and even those with pets.
60” x 80”
Queen-size mattresses are the most commonly purchased and used mattresses on the market. Consequently, they come in a wider variety than other mattress sizes and tend to be advertised with more aggressive (and dubious) promises.
The trusted sleep experts at Texas Mattress Makers have created this guide to shopping for queen-size mattresses so that you can more easily sort through what mattress elements are or are not important to you. Here’s everything you need to know about queen-size mattress types, dimensions, pricing, and more.
Queen-Size Mattress Dimensions
The standard dimensions for a queen-size mattress are 60 x 80 inches (152.5 x 203.5 cm). This mattress size allows two people of average height to sleep comfortably without taking up as much a space as a king-size mattress.
Many single sleepers — including single sleepers whose pets sleep in their bed — also enjoy the additional room a queen mattress affords. Additionally, sleepers who are around 6 feet tall (72 inches) who struggle with the length of twin and full mattresses will find plenty of wiggle room in a queen mattress.
Queen mattresses are often ideal for:
- Teenagers who need extra room
- Single adults, including those that sleep with pets
- Most apartment bedrooms
- Most couples
Some couples that value or need extra space in bed may still feel constricted by a queen-size mattress. This experience is especially true of couples in which one or both partners are tall. In these cases, you may wish to explore investing in a king-size mattress or a split king mattress.
What is the Average Cost of a Queen-Size Mattress?
A typical queen-size mattress will likely cost you between $900 – $1,500 at Texas Mattress Makers. However, if the mattress is for a teen or guest bedroom, we have options as low as $500. From there, prices will vary depending on the components used in the mattress’s construction. Because Texas Mattress Makers handcrafts all of our mattresses 100% in-house, we are able to cut out the middleman and pass on the savings on to you.
Buying Considerations for Finding the Best Queen-Size Mattress for You
1. Your sleeping position
Side sleepers tend to experience pressure points on their hips and shoulders, so they typically benefit from a softer mattress — or a mattress with a soft comfort layer. Meanwhile, back and stomach sleepers may experience back pain if their mattress doesn’t provide enough support to keep their hips raised and their spine aligned.
Since sleeping position can determine so much of what you look for in a mattress, many couples worry about finding a mattress that they will both like. Fortunately, most couples are able to find a “neutral” mattress that answers their respective sleeping needs.
If you and your partner have extremely different needs when it comes to support or firmness, a split king mattress (two twin mattresses within one king bed frame) maintains the intimacy of a shared bed without the hassle of waking up each day with aches and pains.
It is also possible for us to make a queen-size dual comfort mattress. Our dual comfort mattresses are a single mattress that has been adjusted on each side to match your specifications. Just keep in mind that if you get a queen-size dual comfort mattress, the surface area of each half of the mattress will be smaller than a twin bed.
2. Firmness and support
One of the most common questions we receive at Texas Mattress Makers is, “Is it better to sleep on a soft or hard bed?” The answer to this question isn’t particularly straightforward for multiple reasons.
The primary reason, however, is that there is often confusion surrounding the term “firmness.” In the mattress world, firmness relates to the feel of the mattress (soft, medium, firm, etc.) while support refers to the amount of support your body will receive as you sleep.
You can have two equally supportive mattresses that feel either plush or firm. Or, to put it another way, both soft and firm mattresses can be good so long as the person who is sleeping on them prefers the firmness level they’ve been given and is receiving adequate support.
As mentioned in the previous section, the firmness and support each sleeper will want typically depends on their sleeping position. Height and weight should also be taken into consideration when looking at what components your mattress is made of.
3. Mattress type
Because queen mattresses are the most common size of mattresses, they also offer buyers the widest variety of types. However, almost all mattresses can fit within the parent categories listed in the following buying guides.
- Hybrid mattress buying guide
- Memory foam buying guide
- Latex mattress buying guide
- Plush mattress buying guide
Different types of mattresses answer different needs. As you shop, keep in mind your preferences for responsiveness, contouring, pressure relief, edge support, temperature control, and overall feel.
If you (or you and your partner) aren’t sure how to find a mattress that will meet your needs, consider visiting a Texas Mattress Makers store in person.
Whether you’re searching for the best queen foam mattress for your budget, a cooling gel memory foam mattress, a hybrid mattress, or need a custom mattress to suit your needs, we are here to help.
