What is the Difference Between Euro Top and Pillow Top Mattresses?
Euro Top Mattress Pros and Cons
What to Keep in Mind When Shopping
What is a Euro Top Mattress?
A Euro top mattress is a mattress with a soft layer added to its top. This extra layer of cushioning is typically sewn directly onto the top of the mattress and is intended to provide sleepers with additional comfort without compromising the supportiveness of the bottom layer(s).
Euro tops can be affixed to all of your typical kinds of mattresses through our customization process. The material used in the top itself can also vary widely but is typically either foam or latex.
While most people seek a Euro top mattress for the added layer of comfort, these mattresses are also prized for their ability to reduce motion transfer, making them great for couples.
FAQ: Are Euro top mattresses good for side sleepers?
While there is no one “best mattress for side sleepers,” Euro tops do offer benefits for side sleepers. Specifically, the added soft layer can help provide extra contouring and cushioning around areas that would typically receive more pressure, such as the hips and shoulders.
What is The Difference Between Euro Top and Pillow Top Mattresses?
The term “pillow top mattress” was originally applied only to mattresses that had an extra layer of cushioning stitched onto the top of the mattress. Today, however, the term is often used as an umbrella term for both pillow top and Euro top mattresses — and often confused with mattress toppers.
To put it simply, the biggest difference between pillow top mattresses and Euro top mattresses is an aesthetic one. If a Euro top and pillow top mattress are made with the same components, they should not feel any different. Nevertheless, we have found again and again that customers drastically prefer the look of Euro top mattresses, which makes it a more popular choice for customization. (In fact, the only pillow top mattress we sell is our Manhattan Pillow Top Deluxe Soft Mattress!)
Here’s how pillow tops, Euro tops, and mattress toppers differ specifically:
- Euro top mattresses: Euro top mattresses also have an extra layer of cushioning added onto the top of the base layer of the mattress, but this layer is sewn flush to the top of the mattress. Visually, the top layer and the base layer in a Euro top mattress are uniform.
- Pillow top mattresses: Pillow mattresses have an extra layer of cushioning stitched onto the top of the base layer of the mattress. Visually, the top in pillow top mattresses can be seen as a distinctively different layer.
- Mattress toppers: A mattress topper, sometimes called a “pillow top,” is an extra layer of cushioning that is separate from the mattress and can be removed. They are typically purchased separately from the original mattress. Since they are a temporary solution and do not solve the ultimate support problem affecting your mattress, Texas Mattress Makers does not sell mattress toppers.
Since Euro top and pillow top mattresses are made with an array of combinations of mattress materials, you may find it useful to do some brief research regarding the pros and cons of these different types of mattresses.

Euro top mattresses pros and cons
Euro top mattress advantages
- Adds a layer of cushioned comfort to any type of mattress
- Provides additional pressure relief for problem areas like shoulders and hips, making Euro top mattresses an excellent option for side sleepers
- Comes in many different combinations of base and top materials, allowing for a wide variety in both firmnesses and price points
- Many options for both cool and hot sleepers
Euro top mattress disadvantages
- If a Euro top layer is thin, it may degrade or compress quickly (especially if sleepers tend to carry weight). If it is made of low-durability material, it may also suffer from sagging. So long as you speak with our mattress experts and select a mattress that is appropriate for your body type and sleeping position, you should not suffer from these issues when you decide to customize a Euro top mattress with Texas Mattress Makers.
Want to Customize a Euro Top Mattress? Here’s What to Keep in Mind.
Sleeping position/firmness
When shopping for a Euro top mattress, you will want to consider the firmness of both the top layer of padding as well as the mattress underneath it in conjunction with your preferred sleeping position. For example, if you are a stomach sleeper, you may want to customize a Euro top mattress with a firmer base so that your hips get the extra support they need.
Sleeping temperature
As you choose between mattresses, you will also want to keep in mind whether or not you tend to sleep hot or cold. Both layers can contribute to your overall temperature as you sleep, so if you tend to run hot while snoozing, make sure your Euro top mattress incorporates breathable materials.
Eco-friendly options
With more and more people adopting an eco-friendly lifestyle, mattress makers are constantly striving to produce and promote eco-friendly materials. Natural latex mattresses and mattresses with a natural latex Euro top are some of the most popular environmentally conscious options. Texas Mattress Makers sells CertiPUR certified Talalay mattresses.
Desired longevity
If you want a mattress that lasts longer, you will want to check that your Euro top mattress is made with high-quality materials. For example, a mattress with a quantum coil base and natural latex Euro top should last much longer than a mattress with an open coil base and a low-density foam top.
Texas Mattress Makers hand makes all of our mattresses in-house and strives to use the best materials available for our mattresses. We are always happy to answer any questions about our mattress components and their durability.
