BUYING GUIDE
Innerspring Mattress Buying Guide
This is not your typical innerspring mattress buying guide. That’s because, even though innerspring mattresses are still often sold to adults, Texas Mattress Makers has found that an innerspring’s interlinked coils don’t allow for proper support of an adult’s body.
For that reason, we sell innerspring mattresses for young children only, as young children are still able to have their support needs met by an innerspring mattress.
For adult sleepers looking for a responsive, supportive mattress, we encourage you to check out our mattresses featuring individually wrapped coils and Quantum® coils found in our hybrid mattresses.

What to Keep in Mind While Shopping for an Innerspring Mattress
There are some particulars to keep in mind when shopping for your mattress either online or in-store. These include:
- How your child sleep (side, back, stomach, combination)
- How long you want your child’s mattress to last
- Preferred mattress components (including coil type, count, and gauge)
- Mattress firmness/softness
In addition to these factors, there are a few more points to consider when researching innerspring mattresses.
Innerspring Mattress Pros and Cons
Innerspring Mattress Pros | Innerspring Mattress Cons |
Budget-friendly | High likelihood of motion transfer |
Springiness and easy movement atop the mattress | Shorter durability span compared to other mattress types |
Common mattress with many firmness levels | Interconnected coils lack the responsiveness and support required to provide adults with a long term sleeping solution. |
Good for hot sleepers (coils don’t retain heat) | Not ideal for adults |
Innerspring Mattresses vs. Individually Wrapped Coil Mattresses
While there are several important distinctions between hybrid mattresses and individually wrapped coil, the biggest difference is that open coil mattresses have interlinked coils, while individually wrapped coil mattresses house coils that are separated and individually wrapped in fabric.
Here’s why that matters: When you lay down on an open coil mattress, all of the coils surrounding the ones closest to your body move in tandem. This movement causes two main problems. First, naturally heavier parts of your body such as your shoulders and hips will affect the way the mattress conforms to the areas surrounding those areas, especially your back. Secondly, if one person gets into an open coil bed, their partner will likely feel it.
Having separate coils provides each area of your body with more individualized support. This extra supportiveness is especially important to sleepers who suffer from chronic aches and pains. And since individually wrapped coils are separated, movement on one side of the bed is isolated, making it much less likely to interrupt someone sleeping on the opposite side.
Open coil / Innerspring mattresses
Traditional innerspring mattresses — also called open coil mattresses — consist of an interconnected system of coils. These coils are usually hourglass shaped and are typically made of steel.
Individually wrapped coil mattresses
Individually wrapped coil l mattresses consist of a series of individual coils, each of which is individually wrapped in fabric.

Ready for an Upgrade? Check out our Hybrid Mattresses
If your child has grown out of their innerspring mattress or you yourself have grown tired of your innerspring, the best place to start looking for a new mattress is often the hybrid mattress varieties.
Hybrid mattresses combine an individually wrapped coil mattress with comfort layers on top, typically foam or latex. For many, this combination provides ideal support without sacrificing comfort.
As with the coil section of the mattress, customers have options when it comes to choosing which type of foam they wish to have incorporated into their hybrid mattress. To learn more, check out our recommended hybrid mattresses or visit our latex component and foam component pages.
